Welcome to pWare!
Open Source software for IBM System p server (formerly pSeries and RS/6000) machines running AIX 5.2 and higher. My name is Bill Jojo and I work at Hudson Valley Community College where we use a significant amount of Open Source software to manage our environment.
I was tired of trying to manage open source products "on the fly". There are other sites doing similar work, but they don't always stay up to date and some use extracting executables, some LPP and some use rpm. Not that any of those are necessarily bad, but I decided to use IBM's installp program instead. This means that all the packages here are managed through the same method as AIX.
Another reason was to tie applications to other packages for dependency management. Not all rpms or self-extracting executables I've worked with have this feature. You are often on your own to figure out what additional packages you need to get an application working. Sometimes too, the packages are compiled with static libraries making upgrades more difficult to manage.
So what kind of software are we talking here? Well, products like OpenLDAP, Samba, freeRADIUS, Apache and MySQL just to name a few. Oracle InstantClient is no longer offered as a download with PHP. Please see the link on the left.
The software packages are available for both AIX 5.2 and AIX 5.3. The packages that were compiled on AIX 5.2 should run fine on 5.3, but you should really consider using the 5.3 code. It is recommended that you have the following minimum versions of AIX installed:
- AIX 5.2 TL-10-01
- AIX 5.3 TL-06-04 or AIX 5.3 TL-07-02
- AIX 6.1 TL-01-01
AIX 6.1 packages are in the works, but the AIX 5.3 versions should work for you if you need something immediately. Please check back for updates.
The AIX 5.2 code base will no longer be supported after April 2009. Since IBM is also dropping support after this date, it is strongly recommended that you upgrade to an appropriate supported level of AIX.
The Samba Team has announced the end of life for the Samba 3.0 series as of July 2009. Support will still be provided, but the main focus will now be on Samba 3.2, which is also available on this web site.
