pWare — Open Source Software for IBM AIX 5.3 and 6.1

Welcome to pWare!

AIX Open Source software for IBM System p server (formerly pSeries and RS/6000) machines running AIX 5.3 and higher. My name is Bill Jojo and I work at Hudson Valley Community College where we use a significant amount of Open Source software to manage our environment.

There are other sites doing similar work, but they don't always stay up to date and some use extracting executables, some LPP and some use rpm. Not that any of those are necessarily bad, but I decided to use IBM's installp program instead. This means that all the packages here are managed through the same method as AIX.

Another reason was to tie applications to other packages for dependency management. Not all rpms or self-extracting executables I've worked with have this feature. You are often on your own to figure out what additional packages you need to get an application working. Sometimes too, the packages are compiled with static libraries making upgrades more difficult to manage.

The software packages are available for both AIX 5.3 and AIX 6.1. It is recommended that you have the following minimum versions of AIX installed:

AIX 6.1 specific packages are in the works, but the AIX 5.3 versions work just fine.

The 64-bit code is to be treated as Release Candidate for the moment. This is to make certain the code is stable. It is recommended that the 32-bit code be used for production systems. I will post to this section with updates until this is considered production code.

The AIX 5.2 code base is no longer supported.

The Samba Team has announced the end of life for the Samba 3.0 series as of July 2009. Critical bug support will still be provided, but the main focus will now be on Samba 3.3 & 3.4, with bug fixes for 3.2, both of which are also available on this web site.
